The sandwich witch of florence

I can't believe three years ago today I was leaving for Italy! In honor, here's one of the more interesting characters we encountered.

Gretel

American Woman

I saw the American Woman:Fashioning a National Identity show at the met the other day, and did a few quickie sketchs. I love the menswear inspired look of the 1880s & 1890s. There are some really neat photos of the exhibit here

A much more delicate St Micheal than one usually sees.
This St Margaret, riding on the dragon she slayed, was part of a crucifixion scene, to which she had brought her own crucifix. Which I think is kind of like wearing the band tshirt to the concert.

Don't you wanna, wanna Infanta?

Took a quick trip to the met today, and return bearing drawings. I love the paintings that came out of the spanish Habsburg court; they are a funny looking inbred bunch, with some of the most extreme court wear in europe, a winning combination if ever there was. If you've got a card table under your skirt, no one will notice your jaw! how about some more ruffs? Poor Infanta Maria Teresa has inherited the Habsburg face, but it doesn't stop her from the normal childhood joys of annoying angry looking King Charles Spaniels.
