Christmas Crafting

I made mom a pillow (nothing says 'holidays' like an alligator in wellies) & put together a calendar of my art for christmas; she has more info (and pics of me as a kindergartner!) here and here.

Comics the callan way

Here's my third annual holiday comic, and I thought all three of you might be interested in my comic making process.

I start with doodling out poses and dialogue, working out what I want to say & how to draw it-they influence each other and I tend to go back and forth between them.

Then I do a rough layout-here I used panels, mostly just to see if I could, so there was a little bit more of a formal structure to work with than I usually have. Between the rough and ink, I do a cleaned up pencil, but I figured it would be sort of redundant to see it.

Inking! I used a micron on the lettering & panels, and a dip pen for the drawing. I scanned it in, cleaned it up and made
it into a bitmap tiff in photoshop and then coloured it in illustrator.

The final framed product. I think it turned out pretty nicely.

A christmas far more glorious than grand

Long time, no post kids! Friday I went to my friend Jess' house for a christmas/hanukah party, and we attempted to construct a gingerbread house. Martha makes this look waaaaay easier than it actually is. We actually got it to look pretty good, right up until it imploded.

Jess, ever intrepid, decided to reconstruct it lean-to style. Note the decorative use of gelt.

Lady Madonna, Children at your feet

Drawing at the met! I like that she looks sneaky, and there were a couple centuries where the babies in paintings all looked like creepy old men. They're fun to draw :D.

I don't know why he looks so morose; maybe his neckerchief is too tight.

Lil' Wondy

Somehow, my lil batman doodle got picked up & reposted by an italian batman blog- you can see it here. Ignore the terrible italian in my comment. The internet is a small place, and batman is universal.

Mademoiselle

I've been looking at alot of super cute french girl illustrators, and decided to play around with the pencil line and photoshop technique they seem to use; not as cute as theirs, but it has potential.

Where the magic Happens

I always like seeing pictures of people's work spaces, so here's mine; note the tiara on the mac. The cards are hanging on a curtain rod, which is an epiphany my mom had.

a sample of the random post-its handily stuck to the bottom of my monitor.

Coraline, Oscar, Beccasine and Hello Kitty hang out with my printer and scanner

while the dolls of Me & Oscar that Lene made chill over by my binders of sold and unsold artwork.

Happy Birthday Lou

Lene's birthday was this weekend, so I thought it would be fun (given her interest in all things classical) do a sort of greco-roman-via-the-medici portrait of her. I think its a pretty good likeness, and she seemed pleased.

While not as magnificently rainbow or unicorn centric as last year's card, its equally geeky in its own way- its supposed to Puck and Kurt from Glee, which is that musical tv show that's pretty much everywhere right now.

We've been friends for a long time (through various changes, shenanigans, nonsense and fun) and hopefully will be for a long time to come. Happy bday Lou :D

Dr Sketchy's Secret Identity.

Dr Sketchy's anti-artschool and Yoe Studios did a joint drawing event tonight in honor of Yoe's book 'Secret Identity: The fetish art of superman's co-creator Joe Shuster'.
The first drawing was for a challenge to integrate someone from the batman universe into a drawing of the model; the legs are horrible and I wasn't sure how 'tassels' is spelled, but I'm kind of fond of poor scandalized robin. I won a bottle of vodka for it, which is funny considering that I rarely drink.
