Sketchy, Mr Sketchy Galore

So on a whim I went to the Met today- They had an exhibit of Ancient Afghani art, and I drew this singing bird-woman-jug thing; I like that she has both betty page bangs and gauges in her ears- she could be the hipster harpy of brooklyn.



A bunch of girls dancing from a japanese screen- I loved the middle one's sticking out ears.

Charles Beauclerk, Earl of Burford, and the illegitimate child of Kings Charles the 1st and Nell Gywnne, who was the very first in a long line of bawdy red headed english language comediennes; one of the stories of how charles junior supposedly got his title: "The first is that on arrival of the King, his mother said, "Come here, you little bastard, and greet your father." When the king rebuked her for calling him that, she replied, "Your Majesty has given me no other name to call him by." In response, Charles created him Earl of Burford."

Ze Queen

Couldn't think of anything tonight, so here's a quick doodle of marie antoinette, after the Vigee Lebrun portrait of her (ignore the messed up arm). Sign that I've been looking at the pre-industrial crowned heads of europe for too much of my life: as I was drawing her, I wondered if she was a habsburg- one of the more unfortunate looking royal families, best seen in the portraits by Velasquez of the spanish branch of the clan-because she had that very distinctive habsburg face. Looked it up, and sure enough she was; its probably a little sad I recognized that.

BBQ Queens

The lovely Misses E & V Savanella had their annual BBQ tonight, and it was awesome as always- as Liz Degen puts it, 'their house is a magical place filled with rainbows and unicorns and marshmallows.' I managed to do a not so great likeness of shane, but I haven't sneaky-drawn a person in a while, so it is what it is.

Incidentally, that's Queen Victoria's signature crown on his shirt- here, he and vickie helpfully demonstrate how it would have been worn :D

I did some drawings of native american & oceanic masks and sculptures- its refreshing to step away from the european canon sometimes and explore more abstract, expressive approaches to the human figure.

Bethesda Fountain

No matter where I go, there's no place I love as much as New York, especially now that spring has finally arrived. These are a few little sketches of Bethesda Fountain in Central Park- fun fact: Emma Stebbins, who designed the statue in 1868 was the first woman to recieve a major comission for a public work of art in NYC.

Voyage au EURODISNEY

Disneyland paris- I don't even know where to start! It was a really bizzare mix of american kitsch and sensory overload, and was actually alot of fun- I managed to get a few quick sketches of the other park go-ers, but there was no one as outrageous looking as I suspect some of the people at the american parks would be.

Drawing Session

Which one of these things are not like the other

Went to the met with lizzie, vickie, frank & meredith, and despite a case of rusty can't-draw-itis, I did some sketches. The next morning and me and the savanellas had brunch at wobbles, and I got colour to the placemat. They are, as you can see, french toast.

Not all of them are winners.
